A Dangerous Precendent

To bow to the extremists is a new low in freedom of speech and historical investigation. Why be afraid of academic study and investigation? Why threaten murder because someone has a different opinion or view to you? It shows that you are the lowest form of humanity.

The man is a respected scholar and for his next piece of research choose an interesting subject.

Channel 4 cancels Islam documentary screening after presenter threatened

A screening of a controversial documentary on the history of Islam has been cancelled on security advice after its presenter was threatened.

Historian Tom Holland's Channel 4 film Islam: The Untold Story sparked more than 1,000 complaints when it was broadcast.
Holland was threatened online with a torrent of abusive messages on Twitter.
A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: "Having taken security advice, we have reluctantly cancelled a planned screening of the programme Islam: The Untold Story. We remain extremely proud of the film which is still available to view on 4oD."
The private screening was due to take place at the broadcaster's London headquarters on Thursday before an audience of historians and "opinion formers".
The documentary is due to be repeated late on Thursday night and can be viewed online.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean to attack on someone's respected figure.

  6. To Anonymous,
You have your wires crossed and making ignorant statements on things you not even watched and have no knowledge of.

Author of over fifty books and five hundred articles which have been translated into several major Islamic, European and Asian languages, Professor Nasr is a well known and highly respected intellectual figure both in the West and the Islamic world. Possessor of an impressive academic and intellectual record, his career as a teacher and scholar spans over four decades. He has trained different generations of students over the years since 1958 when he was a professor at Tehran University.

You seem to have mistook this for the amatuerly made movie that someone made in the US, that no one has seen, and has caused the riots in Egypt and Libya.

You, dear anonymous, are talking about somethong quite different entirely.

  8. Adey is right. I'm not talking about that stupid, amateurish and deliberatly provocative YouTube attack on Islam. That has no basis in fact. This was a professionally made documentary by a renowned historian. I'll say again did you actually watch it? I did and it says very little. His conclusion is that we know very little about early Islam, Muslims and prophet mohd as the religion came from
Bedouin Arabs. Unlike the roman empires and others at the time they wrote very little down so we have no

    1. Contemporary sources. We have the Koran and that doesn't even state Mecca is the holiest place and in fact early 7th century mosques faced jerusalem, so Mecca being adopted as the holiest of sites was a later invention

  10. Tom Holland on an interesting discussion panal - fairly academic in nature but interesting, respectful and intelligent. He suggests that Abdul Malik held a huge sway in the evolution of Islam.

It is sad when academic debate is stifled by religious extremists. If their faith is so strong it can take a little examination.
