Man dies attempting to queue in Qatar

Malaysian expatriate Muhamad Mercian died this week in the popular City Center Mall after queuing at the prepared food counter in Careforre. Seeking to respect his fellow customers Muhamad formed a queue of one, waiting his turn to be served. As customers and servers ignored him, jumping to the front, he held his nerve and patience believing in the old fashioned principal of first come first served.

After queuing for a record 6 years, 4 months and 25 days he was found slumped against the counter clutching a 50 QR note. He had only popped out for a biryiani and some somsas for his family for an evening meal after only being in Qatar for 1 week. His family said they were proud of him not cutting in and being rude and discourteous to fellow customers but have warned others could befall the same fate if safe guards are not put in place to protect others.

A spokesman for Carrefore said in a statement, 'we are now reviewing procedures to prevent further events like this occurring in the future, however in defence of our staff it was difficult to serve him in the correct order. First 20 labourers came and stood really close to each other so we couldn't see him, then a Qatari man came in and said his wife was waiting in the car outside so demanded to be serve immediately. Then an Arab woman pushed him out of the way, saying that she needed chicken nuggets now or she would start screaming rape. After that our staff thought he was just interested in how we run our business and he was observing us. We thought he was a fan of our meat section, well when it's not being closed by the government.'

    1. @ adamski, maybe he's trying to tell you that civilized people wait their turn...it's called respect for your fellow human beings...ever heard of the concept?...you should try it! :)...

    2. I'm not trying to achieve anything, well actually I am looking for a UN protocol on queuing etiquette to be enforced worldwide, where god fearing citizens on the pain of stoning learn how to be patience and respect everyone else....... Sometimes I really want to give up....

  2. LOL Moza! Spot On! Last week at the food court in Carrefour the same thing happened to me. I was waiting in queue at Pizza Hut and as always got cut in. The guy was taking my order and then scratched it and began taking the 'other' persons order! I yelled at that guy at the counter! And demanded to speak to the Supervisor! I was served but told them I wasnt interested anymore! People in this country do not know how to stand in queue and god forbid if its an Asian ahead of you! (Sic)....Tinks

  3. What annoys me is that there is nothing put in place to make queuing possible in Carrefour/Lulu etc. If they hope to have people queue up in an orderly, civilized fashion to weigh and price the fresh produce, why on Earth is the counter open on 3 sides? The layout ENCOURAGES these barbarians/imbeciles to push in and jump the queue.

  6. Anon - then come out and say it- Qataris have bad manners and no respect for others and need a good bitch slap

    1. wrong again adamski!...it's not just the locals who are guilty of it,although they do it more so than the expats & bitch-slapping is going to help no one,it will probably make it worse...what the offenders need is to have their mistakes pointed out to them & that is NEVER going to happen here, but i'm optimistic about the fact that people who lack civic sense in this country may read this & realize their follies...if even one offender reads this & feels bad the next time he/she does it,then my work here is done! :)...

    2. so how many locals have you told off?? When did they stop laughing??

    3. I must be missing something because I don't see anything in my post that refers to me "telling anyone off" local or expat,so what are you on about?!?!?!...As a matter of fact, when I am in such a situation, I just think to myself that the saying "money doesn't buy class" (or even civic sense!) holds very true! I have to say,you seem to be taking this quite personally adamski! Do you:-
1)cut people off in traffic with your big SUV?
2)jump lines while others wait their turn?
3)behave rudely to service staff wherever you go?
      4)lack an overall civic sense?
If the answer to all of the above is NO, I don't see why you should let this post get you as hot under the collar as it obviously has!...if however the answer is YES, then it's obvious why you're bothered by it! :)...

    4. Anon - "what the offenders need is to have their mistakes pointed out to them'

Its a straight forward question. How many locals so far have you done this to?

      Delete
    5. where did I say I ought to be the one pointing it out to them?!...missed the point again I'm afraid adamski! :)...& in answer to your "straight forward" question, none at all,if a person lacks basic civic sense,I have neither the time nor the inclination to instill that in them...what I meant & what you didn't get was that the service staff ought to point it out & not serve them if they're skipping the queue & but to repeat myself, that is never going to happen here is it?...

      Delete
    6. Anon - so it only applies to others. Not you?? WOW!! Talk about not practicing what you preach. What else is there in your closet?

      Delete
    7. It doesn't apply to me or anyone else that waits their turn adamski, that much is clear is it not? if you jump the queue (hypothetically of course, because you would never do that now would you?), the guy behind the counter should be the one asking you to wait your turn, not me or anyone else in that queue waiting their turn...Now,either you have a very poor grasp of the English language or you're trying really hard to twist this around to salvage some pride, either way,my work here is done...All I can say is I wait my turn, not sure I can say the same about you though! over & out...

    8. Anon - even narrower. "what the offenders need is to have their mistakes pointed out to them" applies only to the indian/philippino behind the counter because you're too timid to open your mouth.

      you're incredible.

      Delete
    9. so everyone who waits their turn & doesn't jump the line is "too timid to open their mouth"?...straightforward 'yes' or 'no' answer will suffice.

    10. anyone who shouts that these people need to be spoken to and then doesnt even do it himself ie leaves it to others, is a coward. You Sir are a hypocrite and a coward.

      Delete
    11. So adamski, how many queue jumpers have you defended? The honest answer is none & that my friend, makes you a hypocrite & a coward,so that's two of us then! & if you answer that you've defended even one of those in question the way you're defending them, sorry shouting for them(to use your terminology!) here, add 'liar' to hypocrite & coward above! good day :)

  11. A second victim has been found at QTel. A nice Japanese man, who died after 2 years, 11 months, 1 day and 22 hours. His politeness forbade him from saying anything as an Egyptian man pushed him to the floor.

  12. The other queueing issue that really pisses me off, is this "please madam, I only have 1 item, can I go ahead of you?" situation...

No, don't cut infront of me... I don't care if you have a half a grape to pay for, stand in the damn queue like everyone else... or go to the "less than 10 items" queue...
